How to Reduce Image Size in KB Without Losing Quality

The two settings that matter — quality and pixel width — and the values that hit 50 KB, 100 KB or 200 KB.

Compress Image NewReduce image file size and keep good quality.

"File size must be less than 100 KB." If you have ever filled a job, exam or government form in India, you have seen this line. Phone photos are usually 2–8 MB, so they get rejected. The good news: you can reduce image size in KB a lot without the photo looking any worse. Only two settings really matter.

The two settings that matter

  1. Pixel size (width). A 4000-pixel-wide phone photo has far more detail than any form or website needs. Shrinking it to 1000–1600 px cuts the file size dramatically.
  2. Quality. JPG and WEBP throw away detail your eye does not notice. Quality 70–80 usually looks the same as the original at a fraction of the size.

Use both in the free Compress Image tool: set a Max width and move the Quality slider. The new size is shown next to every file.

Settings for common size limits

TargetMax widthQualityTypical use
Under 20–50 KB400–600 px50–60Passport photo, signature on forms
Under 100 KB800–1000 px60–70Exam and job application uploads
Under 200–300 KB1200–1600 px70–80Website and blog images
Under 1 MB2000–2500 px80–85Product photos, portfolios

These are starting points — every photo is different. If the result is still too big, lower quality by 5–10 or reduce the width a little.

JPG, PNG or WEBP?

  • JPG — accepted everywhere; best for photos and forms.
  • WEBP — usually 25–35% smaller than JPG at the same quality; best for websites. Some portals do not accept it.
  • PNG — lossless and often large; good for logos and screenshots with text. Convert photos saved as PNG to JPG with the Image Converter.

When a form needs exact pixels

Some forms need an exact size such as 200 × 230 px. Use Resize Image for the exact dimensions first, then compress if the file is still too heavy.

Why it matters for websites

Large images are the most common reason a website loads slowly on mobile, which hurts both visitors and Google rankings. Compressing images and using WEBP is one of the quickest speed wins. See our image SEO guide for the rest.

Quick answers

How do I make a photo under 50 KB?

Set the max width to about 600–800 px and quality to 50–60. Check the new size shown next to the file and lower the quality a little if it is still too big.

Is WEBP better than JPG for small files?

Usually yes — WEBP is often 25–35% smaller at the same quality. But some portals only accept JPG, so use JPG for forms.
